Most of my friends didn't think I was going to a real country. None of them had ever heard of Moldova. Well, it is the least visited country in Europe, so I was delighted to get there.

I learned a cultural no-no while there. When painting a map, I automatically painted a red star on the capital. Isn't that what you always do? Weeeeelllllll, you can't do that in Eastern Europe. A red star is a symbol of communism. I quickly slapped a coat of paint over that star. However, I put it on the ornament to remind me of the lesson. The student painter who explained it said a red star would be the same as painting a swastika on a mural in the US or Germany. Yep, a cultural no-no.
