| As a Peace Corps volunteer in Liberia, West Africa, I collected and illustrated African folk tales for the Ministry of Education. Three of these stories (Spider and the Honey Tree, Black Snake and the Eggs, and The Paramount Chief Who Was No Fool) were rewritten by students involved with the ISTA production into the play, "Deep in the Bush, Where People Rarely Ever Go." In addition, we made paper maché headgear for the boys and animals. The girls learned from a Nigerian women how to tie an authentic African-style scarf. Then, we took the play to the ISTA festival in Kuala Lumpur and also performed it four times in Manila. | |||
