Flat Art with Phillip Martin
Lesson Plan

The work with flat images is a step further than the symbolic art. With flat images, a lot of focus is placed on shapes without reference to volume and depth. The French artist Henri Matisse was the inspiration.  He worked with cut out paper to express himself.  And, just like Matisse, when he couldn't find paper the exact color he desired, he -- and we -- painted the paper.

When you share examples of Matisse's work with your students, you'll see that some of the shapes are very loose and some are more detailed. If you allow the students to work loosely, several will have the project done in one period. That just doesn't cut it in my class. I prefer more detail and time put into all projects.
