Mosaics with Phillip Martin | |||||
Lesson Plan | |||||
Mosaics have been around for centuries and can be made from stone, glass, ceramics and lots of other materials. Unlike the ancient Greeks or Romans, I create mosaics from recycled paper bits and paper mache. They might not be as intricate as ancient Islamic mosaics in Istanbul, Turkey, or Alhambra, Spain, but a lot of careful detail goes into the work. To make the mosaic look good, space the tiles evenly. In addition, you can't have any pieces overlap. On occasion, I have those wonderful artists who use pieces so small that they need safety pins to position the pieces properly. I love that kind of dedication and patience.
