Using a grid to reproduce a drawing is a great tool. I've discussed this Right Brain Drawing activity before. We start off with small illustrations for the yearbook.  Then, we take on the challenge of reproducing famous masterpieces on ceiling tiles.  (I've also used ceiling tiles with Native American and African designs. )

We filled the artroom with famous masterpieces. It isn't easy to begin with, but to make it even more of a learning experience, the students are only use primary colors, black, and white.   They are expert painters and color mixers by the time it is all finished.  And the room looks great.
