I heard from other teachers about this project's success.  It was a challenge for the students to draw the human figure in proper proportions, but the kids learned so much and were talking about it. 

Learning the tricks to draw people correctly is what makes this activity work so well.  The head is used as a unit of measure.  Height, body width, and location of body parts are measured by heads instead of inches.  And, if you can give the project extra meaning -- like advertising for the school play -- it is hard to miss with this activity.
