Cut Outs with Phillip Martin
Lesson Plan

This lesson is, of course, an introduction of Matisse to the students. It can be linked to cut outs of other famous masterpiece, history lessons or whatever meets your needs. In this particular lesson, it tied to a study of the rainforest.

Artists learn a good lesson about foreground, middle ground, and back ground as they create cut outs that tie into their study of the rain forest.  Very simple backgrounds are cut out, showing little detail.  Separate layers of paper indicate trees, bushes and grass.  Rain forest creatures are then applied with great detail to the foreground.   It requires a lot of patience to get the desired results, but good art cannot be rushed.
