Paper Mache Snakes with Phillip Martin
Lesson Plan

This idea was born out of a low budget and using what was available -- but what a winner

Integrating with a study of the deserts, students create paper mache snakes.   Giant seed pods growing on the flame trees around the campus are used as the foundation of the bodies.  Four pods are taped together (giving a magnificent slithering effect) and then covered with newspaper and paper mache.  When they are completed, they still rattle.  So, I guess you could say our snakes are authentic rattle snakes.

You don't teach in Zambia and have flame trees? You can also wrap newspaper around metal clothes hangers. Unfortunately, you won't have the authentic rattles.v
