Hermanus Marine Reserve

What you want to see

HERMANUS    I headed off to Hermanus to see the Southern Right Whales.x October was supposedly the peak season to view the whales -- and I'd never seen them before. xI didn't have all the information I needed before I left with the bus. xI'd expected a boat tour. xWell, most people didn't take a boat tour of Hermanus. xI didn't even see one boat in the bay the entire day.

The city had the coastline developed into a wonderful marine nature reserve with stone paths. xAt times whales came within five meters of the shoreline. xFor that kind of viewing, no boat was needed. xHowever, the key words were "at times". xI didn't have one of those times.

I did see two whales but they were pretty far away. xI saw their tails and an occasional flipper. xIt wasn't what I'd hoped for, but it was better than not seeing them at all. xThat would have been such a bummer.
