A carriage ride through town hard to take a bad picture Bicycles in Brugge |

BRUGGE . ...As one of Europe's best preserved medieval cities, Brugge is on everyone's list of "must see" sights if they know anything about Belgium at all. And, it is well worth the visit. The city center has changed little since the 13th century. It was the most important trading center in Europe from the 13th to 15th century. The name Brugge in fact comes from the Old Norse "Bryggja" which means landing stage. Needless to say, it was a bustling port city until the river changed and merchants abandoned it for Antwerp. Brugge is sometimes called "the Venice of the North" because of all the canals running through it. Of course, there are canal rides and, if that is not to your liking, you can also tour the city by horse and buggy. How did I see the city? I walked. There was so much to see and you really get more of an eyeful that way. |
