I was amazed with the kind of magic Romanians could do with
wood. The region of Maramures was famous for the wooden churches,
mostly built in the eighteen century when Gothic architecture was
at its height. Brsana Monastery, a new complex built in the traditional
style, looked like it was placed in a Hansel and Gretel setting. It
was all done in wood. But, even local houses had intricate trim along
the eaves and magnificent gate entrances.
