The
Wall at the Beginning of the Project at the Scoala (School)

There
wasn't much space for any more help. In fact, not everyone was able
to paint at the same time. There were simply too many elbows and just
not enough elbow room. However, nobody complained. At least, not in
a language that I understood!

The
plan was to incorporate a little of the Roma (Gypsie) traditions into
the mural. The wooden gate and fence were traditional features of many
of the homes in that part of Romania. The drawing had to have a horse,
since they are also so important in the culture.

I
also planned to write "Welcome" across the top. When I asked
at the hotel desk, I was told it was "Cu Plácere". Actually,
that means "You're Welcome." As it turned out, it didn't matter.
The space provided for the mural was too narrow to include text.

The
workers were certainly dedicated. In just two days the mural was completed.
Lucky for us, it was Easter break and students were not underfoot while
we painted in a small area. But, when they come back to school, hopefully
they will think the mural looks just as good as a traditional Romanian
Easter egg.

Special
thanks must go to Winsor & Newton and
Den Braven Romania. All the paint for
the project was donated by Winsor & Newton. Den Braven sponsored
the trip to Romania. It's really great to know the work with the murals
is appreciated.
