The number one tourist destination in Guatemala is Antigua. I still don't understand how that is possible when Tikal is also in the country. However, the charming colonial city of Antigua is a whole lot more accessible than the Mayan pyramids of Tikal. And, the streets of Antigua were much more crowded. However, in my heart, Tikal will forever be the best destination in Guatemala. Closely behind that is Flores, a charming little town on an island, that for many people is the stopping point on the way to Tikal.

Many people say that "half the fun is getting there". Well, when travel is easy and comfortable, there just is not a lot to tell people about the experience. But, when you ride in a chicken bus in Guatemala, there is a lot to write home about -- even if none of it has anything to do with comfort.
