Cancun ........ I don't travel the same way that a lot of people do. I don't go to resorts, spas, bars, fancy restaurants or the usual tourist haunts. Cancun had all of that. There was a strip with fancy hotels along the waterfront. I was told not to miss it. I missed it, on purpose. I spent the bulk of my time in Cancun exploring two markets. Market 28 was a tourist destination and Market 23 was more of a local experience. Both had things to enjoy. At Market 28, the merchants were seriously after tourist pesos, dollars and euros. I found it best to walk by quickly and not let them bother me. |

The
Christmas spirit at the meat market in Mercado 23
|

On one market visit, there was a specific store I wanted to find. Market 28 was huge and I had trouble finding the place. I walked circles through the market at a fast pace. At first, the merchants asked, "Will you come into my shop?" After a few rounds, the question changed to, "What are you looking for?" As I continued walking in circles, rapidly, they finally asked in earnest, "Are you lost?" I guess I kept them entertained. My favorite place in all of Cancun was my bed and breakfast. I had the experience in my little casa that just never possibly could ever happen at a giant glizty resort. I made some wonderful Mexican friends who made my time in Cancún so very special. And, a big part of that involved Chichen Itza. |
