Playa del Carmen ........ Yes, it was a tourist trap, but much smaller than Cancun. And, it may be the best tourist trap on the planet! They (whoever they were) did so much right in Playa del Carmen. There was basically one main walking street for tourists, Fifth Avenue. It was a block from the beach. That street was lined with dining for any budget, cafes, souvenirs and all the shops you would expect. But, it was what you didn't expect that was so fascinating, at least for the photographer in me.

Mariachi bands walked up and down the street. I loved that touch of Mexican culture! Valadores, those elegant men who hung upside down as they gracefully swung around a pole, performed several times a day. On the beach, musicians in tribal costumes chanted, sang, drummed and danced. But, my personal favorite were the Aztec kings wearing feathered headdresses stretching a yard or more in all directions. Yep, I really loved Playa del Carmen, even without much time spent on the playa (beach). I loved it so much that I returned to paint a mural.
