TINTORERAS ... .Across the bay from Puerto Villamil is the little island of Tintoreras. I was told that you went there to see white tipped sharks (that's what "tintoreras" means) and marine iguana. There are also blue footed boobies, sally lightfoot crabs and penguins. We didn't see any of the sharks and I'd already seen lots of marine iguana behind my office at the Charles Darwin Foundation. However, nothing prepared me for the marine iguana on Tintorearas. There were hundreds of them all piled on top of each other.

  Marine Iguana
It was a cool day. In fact, it was the only cool day I experienced in my six weeks in the Galapagos Islands. As cool as it was for me, it's worse for cold blooded reptiles. They piled on top of each other for body heat. It was just amazing to see. And, when you watch a pile of marine iguana long enough, you are bound to see some of them spit salt. They eat a lot of plants that grow in the salt water. After a while, they have to get rid of excess salt. Spitting is the way they solve that problem of excess salt.
