HUAYNA PICCHU, PERU ... .The "Lost City" rests in a saddle created by two mountains, Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu. The biggest of those mountains is Machu Picchu (from Quecha for Old Mountain). However, the one you see in all the photos is Huayna Picchu (Young Mountain). There were no restrictions on climbing Huayna Picchu in the past. Now, there is a limit of four hundred people per day, in two groups of two hundred.

Adjusting to the high altitude is key to climing Huayna Picchu. And, on my first visit, after just three days in Peru, I was not even close to adjusted. I seriously feared I was in trouble on that hike up the mountain. In the end, on the top third of the mountain, I counted ten steps and rested the whole way up. But, I did make it to the top!

Well, on the second trip, I still rested (a lot), but I had been in high altitudes for five weeks. It was never as bad as when I wasn't used to the altitude.  Of course, it was way more crowded up at the top.  Way more crowded!  But, I lingered until many people left. And, I was so proud that I was able to make it to the top of that young mountain.
